Navigating the Path to Our Dream

Embarking on the development of Castleview Holiday Lodges was a dream fuelled by a vision to offer unique holiday experiences in the Scottish Borders. However, the journey from dream to reality is often paved with practical challenges, one of the most significant being the planning application process. In this post, we share our experiences and the invaluable lessons learned during this crucial phase, aiming to provide insights and encouragement to others on a similar path.

In October 2021, we took a decisive step forward by submitting our planning application. For this, we partnered with a company we had previously worked with, a decision that proved instrumental in navigating the complexities of the planning system. The expertise and guidance they provided were crucial, allowing us to focus on our day-to-day responsibilities while they managed the application process.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the planning process was the sheer number of surveys required. From roads and ecology to tree and lighting surveys, each one was essential for moving forward. The ecology survey, in particular, highlighted the delicate balance between development and environmental conservation, as it could only be conducted outside the bird breeding season, causing further unexpected delays.

After about two months of diligent work, adjustments, and patience, we received the planning approval in December 2021. This milestone was a testament to the importance of having the right support system and the unpredictability of the planning process.

The path to realising Castleview Holiday Lodges was both challenging and enlightening. The planning application process, in particular, taught us the value of expert guidance, patience, and resilience. By sharing our story, we hope to inspire others embarking on similar ventures to persevere through the hurdles. The journey might be complex, but the destination—a dream realised—is undeniably worth it.
