Designing Our Dream: The Making of Unique Holiday Lodges in the Scottish Borders.
The Beginning of a Dream
Embarking on the creation of Castleview Holiday Lodges, nestled in the scenic heart of the Scottish Borders near Lauder, we were novices to the world of holiday accommodation. With every step we took in designing our lodges, with the aim of making the stunning Lauderdale views a central feature, came a wave of questions and second-guesses. The path was uncharted, our experience limited, but our vision was clear and our passion as a family to get this project going, boundless.
The First Sketches
The design process began humbly with Adam, our son, putting pencil to paper to sketch the initial outline of what would eventually become our lodge blueprint. This was our first foray into transforming our vision into reality, and with it, the realisation of how much we had to learn.
Gathering Inspiration
As a family, we delved deep into our own holiday memories, dissecting what aspects had resonated with us and what we’d have changed about the places we’d stayed. Our journey of discovery took us from extensive online research to visiting other holiday lodge parks, absorbing everything that contributed to their success.

Refining Our Vision
Adam’s initial sketches evolved dramatically as we navigated through our learning curve, painstakingly questioning every detail and sometimes overanalysing our choices. We marked out the lodge’s footprint directly on the site, using spray paint and wooden poles to outline rooms and spaces. This hands-on approach led to countless adjustments, from moving walls to rethinking layouts, including the decision to incorporate a Jack & Jill bathroom (two doors) for guest convenience.
Embracing Feedback and Evolution
Our journey was a continuous loop of feedback, revision, and, occasionally doubt. We sought opinions from family members and weighed on their input heavily, allowing it to shape and refine our plans. The collaborative process, though fraught with uncertainty, was also filled with moments of clarity, progress and excitement.
Realising the Dream
Finally, with the guidance of our architect and a deep trust in our collective vision, we arrived at a design that not only embraced the majestic views of Lauderdale but also resonated with the essence of what we hoped to achieve. The feedback from our guests has been a heartwarming affirmation of our efforts, celebrating the thoughtful layout and the immediate impact of the stunning views upon entering.
